Stanley Kubrick

Why he's hipster approved: It would be hard not to include American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick to the list of hipster approved directors. Although some of his films are slow, boring or self-indulgent his influence can not be questioned. The film that really seals the deal for hipsters is A Clockwork Orange. Hipsters give this film a bit more credit than it deserves, sighting this as his masterpiece and overlooking the films he really achieved greatness with. Add to this the unfortunate side effect of 1 in every 12 male hipsters thinking it's original to dress up as Alex DeLarge for Halloween (White jumper, fake eyelashes, bowler cap, cane, boots and cod-piece) and you have a director that some hardcore hipsters have distanced themselves from in recent years.

What hipsters won't admit: They thought Stanley Kubrick was British.

How to impress a hipster: Don't mention A Clockwork Orange around a true hipster. Instead offer up a conversation on Kubrick's time as a fashion photographer for Look Magazine.
